The Camelot Wheel (also known as the Camelot System or Harmonic Mixing Wheel) is a tool that simplifies musical key relationships into an easy-to-use number and letter system. Created by Mark Davis, it's become the standard for DJs who want to mix harmonically.
The system assigns each of the 24 musical keys (12 major, 12 minor) a code from 1A to 12B. A codes are minor keys and B codes are major keys. Keys with adjacent numbers and the same letter are compatible, as are keys with the same number but different letters.
Think of it as a simplified Circle of Fifths designed for practical use — you don't need to know music theory to use it. Just match the codes.
Three simple rules for harmonic mixing with the Camelot system.
Move between A and B with the same number (e.g., 8A ↔ 8B). This switches between relative minor and major — always sounds smooth.
Move one number up or down while keeping the same letter (e.g., 8A → 9A or 7A). This is the most common harmonic mixing move.
Moving up in numbers (+1, +2) gradually increases energy. DJs use this to build momentum throughout a set.
